Bursitis is the inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs called bursae, found in the large joints of the body. These bursae act as a cushion between the bones, tendons, and ligaments in the joints. They prevent the bones in the joints from undergoing friction during constant movements. Bursitis can occur due to excessive repetitive movements of the extremities. They can occur in the joints of the hip, knee, toes, elbow or shoulders. The symptoms of bursitis may range from redness & soreness, swelling to sharp, shooting, debilitating pain on slight movement or exertion of the affected joint.
Causes of Bursitis
Bursitis is often the result of excessive strain caused to the joints due to repetitive actions such as in sports like tennis, weightlifting, football or in dancing having steps involving constant, hard tapping of feet on the ground, sitting for long hours on hard surfaces. Other causes which can give rise to bursitis are rheumatoid arthritis, gout or any injury to the affected joint.
