The ankle is the main joint which attaches the bones & ligaments of the leg with that of the feet. The ankle is made up of three bones. Ankle pain can arise from gout or arthritis, sprains, or due to fractures & injury. Often, ankle pain can radiate to the calf muscles of the legs and to the feet.
Reasons for Ankle/Feet Pain
Ankle fractures are pertaining to the damage caused to the bones comprising the ankle joint. The pain may not necessarily be felt from the fractured ankle but from surrounding tendons & ligaments.
Deposition of uric acid crystals in various joints of the body can cause excruciating pain and restrict mobility to a great extent. Urate crystals deposit below the skin in the ankle and form lumps called tophi. Rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis, scleroderma, psoriatic arthritis can also affect the ankle causing stiffness.
An ankle sprain can result from a ligament tear or damage causing stiffness, swelling, and tenderness in the ankle. An ankle sprain can often occur due to engaging in sports having rapid movements with the feet planted such as football or soccer. Twisting an ankle due to wearing high heels can also cause ligament tear.
RICE Therapy for Ankle/Foot Pain
RICE therapy involves Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. These four strategies can promote healing & improve flexibility in minor ankle pain. However, ankle fractures may require surgery and more detailed medical intervention.
Adequate rest is absolutely necessary for the stretched ligament to heal. Using ice packs helps to reduce swelling & inflammation. Compression involves the use of elastic cloth bandages which are wrapped around the affected ankle to reduce stiffness and swelling. Keeping the ankle in an elevated position and also reduce swelling.
